What is Home Care?

Home care is a community-based approach to care, helping maintain the independence and comfort of those in need of care.

Home care services are typically for people who are looking to age in place, manage chronic health issues, recover from a medical setback, or who have special needs or a disability. Unlike hospital and physician services, home care is not insured. Provinces and territories are not required to offer it, however most offer some sort of home care.

Home care is typically provided by a professional caregiver, registered nurse, or licensed practical nurse and designed to support people in their homes. We refer to it as home care, however it can also be referred to as social care, in-home care, community care and domiciliary care.

Home care services may include:

  • Nursing

  • Personal care such as help with bathing, dressing, and feeding

  • Physiotherapy

  • Occupational therapy

  • Speech therapy

  • Social work

  • Dietitian services

  • Homemaking and

  • Respite services

While home care can make a big impact on the client, it can also improve the lives of the client’s friends and family who have been making personal sacrifices to care for their loved ones. Home care is a very holistic method of care, encompassing the big and small tasks, from housekeeping to nursing care, that will keep your loved ones comfortable and safe at home while providing you peace of mind and freedom to get back to focusing on quality time with your loved ones.
