Do You Have to Pay for Home Care in Saskatchewan?

As Home Care is not covered by the Canada Health Act, it is up to provincial and territorial governments to provide public funding for home care. As such, there are private and public home care providers.

Both the Saskatoon and Regina Regional Health Authorities provide public home care. We encourage all providers to try and qualify for publicly funded home care. For those who do not qualify, cannot wait to qualify, or wish to pursue private home care for the increased control, flexibility and reliability, there are two programs that provide funding to cover the costs of private home care.

  1. Individualized Funding for Home Care

  2. Community Living Self-Directed Funding

Directly-funded care programs provide individuals with a budget to arrange their own home care. If you have been approved for this funding by the government and abide by the rules of the agreement, you can use these funds to book care through Alto.

Individualized Funding for Home Care

Individualized funding is provided by the Government of Saskatchewan to give individuals with long-term care needs increased choice and flexibility in home care. It comes with additional responsibilities, including the hiring of caregiver(s) as employee(s). This means you will be required to apply for coverage under The Workers’ Compensation Act and abide by The Saskatchewan Employment Act. To see all the requirements, and to apply, visit the Government of Saskatchewan website and talk to the Community Care Branch.

Community Living Self-Directed Funding

Self-Directed Funding is provided by the Government of Saskatchewan through the Ministry of Social Services for adults with intellectual disabilities. The goal of the funding is to provide increased choice and control over the supports they need. To find out more information, visit the Government of Saskatchewan website and talk to your local Community Living Office.

If the government qualifies a client for direct funding and the client meets their criteria, the client may use direct funding on our platform, however it is up to the client to ensure they are abiding by their direct funding agreement.

If you have already qualified for direct funding and have questions on how to use it on alto, contact us at help@findalto.com with the subject line “Direct Funding".
