How to support your clients
Deciding to get formal care isn’t an easy decision. Many clients have put a lot of thought into it and are wary about trusting someone to handle their care.
How can you support them in these difficult times?
Be flexible and open. Some clients may not know exactly what they need, or are too overwhelmed to come up with a precise list of tasks. In these cases, use your expertise and best judgement. Help in whatever way you can, that will make the greatest, quickest impact on the client.
Other clients will have very specific duties for you to perform. In these cases, complete all of the duties they have asked of you. If you have time at the end of your booking, chat with the client or do some small tasks like housekeeping or meal preparation. These small things show that you care and can make a big impression on the client.
Let them know how it’s going. If it was a good day, the client seemed to be in a great mood, you had a great time, let them know. Even if it didn’t go so well, explain what happened, how you dealt with it, and end on a positive note by sharing a good thing that happened or explain that you think it may go better next time.
Providing care is an incredibly meaningful profession, making a huge impact on the lives of those receiving care. As a caregiver, you have the ability to make a positive difference in the lives of your clients.
